This is a hand-drawn stencil, inspired by various patterns found in oriental and middle-eastern designs. The final result is reminiscent of a hand-crafted batik. The title combines Indian Monsoon’s with seasonal winds from the Arabian Sea, and Kwila wood, a durable, yet increasingly rare tree with flecks of gold running through its grain. The colour instantly connects Boyarde with childhood memories of picking out Quality Street chocolates with the purple foil wrappers.

Inspired by Lichtenstein and his appropriation art of everyday imagery, this piece mischievously plays on vintage comic strips that convey women at extreme ends of the spectrum. Women of either super-human strength, aggression and sexualised hostility, or vulnerable and helpless in search of ‘Prince Charming’.
