Boyarde Messenger - Photographer

Boyarde Messenger was born in London 1980. After studying a BTEC Foundation in Art at Wimbledon School of Art in 2000 in Art, then 'flipping the coin' for direction, she then gained her BA Hons Photography at Bournemouth Arts Institute in 2003.

She is described as an Environmental Portraitist; her working background is primarily commercial, having photographed numerous international album and singles covers for established and up-and-coming artists, directing music videos, working with brands such as Smirnoff Vodka, J&B Whiskey, and working as a film stills photographer. Boyarde continues to work commercially whilst also focusing on her own projects, finding that the gallery space is where she can truly express herself.

Boyarde has three main areas of work, firstly her recently-made second home of Belize in Central America, secondly her fascination with the female form and Scopophilia: the pleasure of looking. And thirdly her love of Pop Art and the aesthetic.

In all her series surrounding the female, be it her 'pop art' approach, or her more traditional take on it, from every different viewpoint, her images highlight her playful personality, liberating the object of desire, still taking pleasure from the aesthetics of the female form, injecting it with humour, frivolity and mischievousness, yet still confirming the vital balance between power and vulnerability.

Her Belize work, stems from discovering a whole new world of inspiration across the continent feeding her fantasy, from the beautifully un-done landscape to the fiercly proud and free spiritedness of the people, her images work on creating a narrative and an 'open' film still. In particular this comes through in her Night Prowl Series, cinematic in style, huge void spaces filled with human interaction with major influence from Eduard Hopper.
